As Costa Rica’s capital, and largest city, San Jose offers easy access to long distance transportation routes for traveling into this region. Depending on your departure location, you can either catch a flight or bus ride to the city center or its outskirts. Since there are so many companies offering travel options, you can book early to select the best fares and save as much money on transportation as possible without sacrificing safety, quality or service. Here are some transportation methods to consider.
Dozens of airlines send constant flights to San Jose all throughout the year. The airlines range from major carriers, like Delta and British Airways, to smaller organizations including Veca Airlines and Volaris. There are even seasonal flights that only run during the peak traveling periods, such as during the holidays and summer months.
For flights into this region, you have two major international airport hubs to choose between, Juan Santamaria and TobÃas Bolaños Palma.
Sitting just 10 miles outside the main city center, the Juan Santamaria airport serves as the major hub for flights around the world. More than four million passengers travel through this airport each year due to its incredible safety record, reasonable rates and quality service.
TobÃas Bolaños Palma
As a newly established transportation hub, TobÃas Bolaños Palma only receives commercial flights from one airline, Nature Air, at this time. Companies offering private charter flights do use this airport with great frequency, however.
With so many flight options available, you can select an airline offering discount packages when booked early or alongside hotel accommodations. Furthermore, due to the sheer number of flights coming through Juan Santamaria, you can often politely request a seat upgrade with much success.
Bus Ride Options
The buses can transport you in from outlying areas within just a few days. The bus companies that travel right through San Jose include:
- Tica Bus
- King Quality
You will need to contact them for ticket pricing information and terminal pickup and drop off locations while planning your trip. Schedule your seat in advance to obtain the best rates. Make sure you are positive about your departure dates and times, as changing the secured ticket will likely cost extra, negating your initial savings.
Plans to expand the railway will provide even more options for travel to San Jose in the future. As its sits, however, the railway is not generally a chosen route due to its outdated construction materials and techniques. The nearly antique engines and passenger cars, currently in service, were obtained used and in fairly poor shape.
San Jose railways do not use any signaling technology at this time either, so train safety relies on strict adherence to established timetables. As the railway extends into the city, however, many planned upgrades will go into effect to improve reliability, comfort and safety for all passengers. Until that time, it is likely best to stick with travel to San Jose, Costa Rica by plane or bus.
